Your new role
**12 Fixed term contract** As Legal Counsel, you will play a vital role in supporting the governance and legal framework of the organisation. Reporting to the General Counsel, you will provide expert legal advice across various disciplines, ensuring compliance with legislation and supporting strategic objectives. You will manage litigation matters, interpret key legislation, draft and review contracts, and work closely with internal and external stakeholders to mitigate legal risks.
Key responsibilities include:- Providing legal advice on civil proceedings, legislative interpretation, and compliance.
- Preparing legal briefs, reports, and documentation for senior executives, government authorities, and tribunals.
- Drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, and commercial arrangements to protect organisational interests.
- Managing civil litigation proceedings from initiation to resolution.
- Advising on policies and programs to align legal operations with strategic goals.
- Collaborating with stakeholders, including external legal counsel, to address complex legal matters.
- Ensuring compliance with procedural rules, confidentiality, and legislative requirements.
- Responding to requests for data and information from external government departments.
What you'll need to succeed
To excel in this role, you will bring significant legal expertise and strong interpersonal skills, coupled with a collaborative and strategic mindset.
Key requirements include:- Admission to practice as an Australian lawyer with an unrestricted Victorian practising certificate.
- Demonstrated experience in applying legal principles across diverse areas of law.
- Proven ability to provide strategic legal advice in a complex organisational environment.
- Strong skills in drafting reports, briefs, and correspondence with clarity and precision.
- Exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Understanding of public sector practices and environments is advantageous.
