Your New Role
As a Senior Lawyer, you will provide accurate, practical, and strategic legal and regulatory advice to support the organisation in performing its functions related to the benefits scheme. Reporting to the Managing Principal Lawyer, you will play a key role in ensuring operational processes and decisions are founded in sound legal reasoning while meeting corporate objectives. This is an ongoing position based in either of the two major locations, with a hybrid work arrangement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advice across diverse areas, including the administration and enforcement of the scheme.
  • Offer strategic, risk-based legal advice to internal stakeholders with minimal supervision.
  • Prepare and instruct counsel in complex and sensitive cases.
  • Contribute to the development of communications, operational processes, systems, and policies.
  • Advise on privacy, freedom of information, authorisations, delegations, contracts, and employment matters.
  • Draft, develop, and review documents, policies, procedures, and tools for internal use.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with internal stakeholders.
  • Mentor junior staff and support their professional development.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant public records legislation.

What You'll Need to Succeed
To excel in this role, you will need significant experience in delivering sound and practical legal advice in administrative law or employment and industrial relations. Your ability to develop a deep understanding of the benefits scheme and its regulations, coupled with excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, will be crucial. Experience in criminal law or working in an in-house legal or regulatory environment is advantageous.

Key Requirements
  • You must be admitted to practice as an Australian lawyer with a minimum of 5+ Years PQE.
  • Significant experience in employment law, administrative law and industrial relations.
  • Ability to understand and apply the benefits scheme and its regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong legal, research, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and manage multiple priorities.
  • High-level interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Experience mentoring junior staff.
