The Airport Environment Branch (AEB)'s primary responsibility is the regulation of 21 leased federal airports on Commonwealth land. The Branch administers the Airports Act 1996, its associated regulations and the airport head leases. We are looking to hire several experienced environmental professionals to join the Branch's Per- and Poly-fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Airports Investigation Program. The candidate can be based anywhere in Australia.
Your new role
- Provision of specialist PFAS technical advice and support for the PFAS Taskforce and departmental executives to promote the efficient and effective implementation of the PFAS Airports Investigation Program.
- Provide technical expertise supporting the delivery of the PFAS Airports Investigation Program, including:
- Review of all technical deliverables prepared by external contaminated land lead consultants at up to eight airports.
- Identify technical issues and sensitivities that may impact time, budget, or otherwise affect the ability of the PFAS Airports Investigation Program to meet its objectives.
- Offer technical advice based on national guidelines to resolve issues or mitigate risks.
- Capacity-building and mentorship of non-technical PFAS Taskforce team members to enhance their capability and ability to understand, interpret and respond to emerging risks to program delivery.
- Specific advice on interpretation and practical application of relevant national and jurisdictional environmental requirements.
- Provision of specialist technical review and evaluation of proponent tender submissions for high-risk, high-value procurement exercises in accordance with Commonwealth Procurement Rules and the departmental procurement framework.
- Participation in whole-of-government engagement forums relating to national and international developments in PFAS management research and remedial technology trials.
- Communicate and make decisions that are based on professional judgement, evaluating risks and in the context of a complex and changing environment.
- Promotion of the program through attendance and participation in relevant industry associations and events
What you'll need to succeed
- Qualifications in environmental science or contaminated land management
- Experience managing and/or undertaking PFAS investigation projects, including understanding of relevant Federal, State or Territory guidelines or legislative requirements applicable to PFAS investigation and management.
- Necessary skills include:
- Working knowledge of national contaminated land guidelines (ASC NEPM, PFAS NEMP, etc) and airport environmental regulations (AEPRs).
- Experience in stakeholder engagement and consultation, including the communication of complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
- Strategic outlook to consider technical issues in the context of the programme as a whole.
- Problem-solving skills and ability to make decisions based on data from multiple sources.
- Ability to work independently and with limited direction
